Debate

The debate I chose to analyze for this blog was the second Presidential debate between Trump and Clinton on October 9th, 2016. I chose to pick the 27:35-35:00 minute section during this debate because this time in the video is when you get to truly see Donald's debate style. Donald does a great job of telling us that Obamacare is terrible "We know it, he knows it" and says that he will be repealing and replacing it with something much less expensive. Some things Donald did poorly was explaining the plan that he plans to replace Obamacare with; another thing was failing to actually answer the question of how he plans on "De-funding Obamacare while making coverage available to all". Those two things are such are so contradictory that it almost makes my head spin hearing that sentence. Another thing Donald did that hurt him in my opinion was talk so nonchalantly about how "bad Islamic people are at reporting when they see something going on". Talking about a whole culture being on watch for their own culture to be committing crimes makes people feel like they are criminals themselves for sharing that religion. People hold religion up to the highest standards and I feel like Trump made himself look very close minded and weak by bashing a group of peoples religion so blatantly.

If I had any say in this debate I would tell Donald to maybe have a plan when talking about a healthcare plan you want to implement... not just say that it exists while not saying it's name or saying a single detail about the healthcare plan. I would also tell Donald to pick his battles carefully so he doesn't seem like such a panderer or flip flopper. Another thing that couldn't hurt Donald to talk about would maybe be his Education plan and how he plans to keep educating our youth while not bankrupting the country. Maybe also talk about his plan on what to do with international relations without talking to China or Russia. I'm not sure if it is possible for Donald to leave China out of anything so I doubt they'll be left behind. This debate I will admit was one of the more childish debates we watched in this election cycle. It was chalk full of the candidates cutting each other off, going over time, dodging questions and making subtle comments about the other candidate. In honor of this debate being so childish I am going to post photos of my favorite new internet meme, Tiny Trump.

  1. Yeah, I agree that Donald Trump's lack of explanation for a Health Care plan should definitely be considered one of his downfalls in this debate.

This particularly bothers me because his party has been bashing Obamacare (or ACA) since it came into place. Moreover, what we've been seeing recently is how obvious it is that Republicans don't have a better plan, or possibly even a plan at that; which is extremely frustrating because they've had over six years to develop one.

Maybe if people focused more on his responses in this portion of the debate everyone would know that they have nothing to offer and people would realize that Obamacare is better than its' reputation has been.

  2. I am really glad that you explained what he did poor. The fact that he is unable to explain his plans in clear detail shows he does not have anything set in stone. He knows these policies are bad and wants to change them, he just doesn’t know how. This seems to be a common problem Trump faces. Another common problem is that he cannot answer the questions that are presented. He is able to side step every question and turn it into a lecture of how bad Hillary is and how most of these problems with our government are her fault. The fact that this is an every debate thing shows his lack of characteristics and preparedness that every President must have. I also agree with you when you say that he needs to choose his battles more carefully. He goes after anyone that says anything negative about him and as President he will have too carefully choose his battles. He should not have time to be tweeting in response to every negative thing said about him. He needs to focus on helping out every American he can.

  3. A better summary of Donald's debate tactics could not have been made: make outlandish claims and provide no substantial backing to those claims. I though you did a fantastic job of outlining his weaknesses through an analysis of his approach to healthcare. The question I would ask to you is why was this strategy of obscureness and ambiguity so effective in the debate setting?

  4. I also analyzed this debate, and while I thought it was atrocious to blame muslims for their own position in this country, I think it's a common and successful strategy Trump uses to shift blame away from the outcome of his rhetoric or policies.

Also I enjoyed the quote: "maybe have a plan when talking about a healthcare plan you want to implement".

  5. I agree with many of the comments you made, especially the ones that reflected poorly of trump's debate style. Trump definitely needs a btter plan of attack and not just an attack. You also made an interesting comment about Trump's stance Obamacare. It was definitely a backwards comment that he should have thought more about.
